Stay home and visit the Museum of Science and Industry with Mayor Lightfoot

May 22, 2020

Dear Chicago students and families,
As we continue to battle COVID-19 together, I want you to know that the health and safety of all Chicagoans remains my top priority, as does the continued education of our young people.

Last month, in partnership with Citadel, we launched Stay Home. Hit Play., a weekly video series that will bring engaging, educational programming from Chicago institutions to students and families across the city. The series has partnered with the city’s museums and cultural institutions to invite students to go behind the scenes at some of Chicago’s most iconic places on Wednesdays while staying home. In the fourth episode of Stay Home. Hit Play. segment airing today on https://www.hitplaychicago.org/, Mayor Lightfoot will stop by the Museum of Science and Industry to explore science storms, a 3D printing lab, trains, and engineering.

Throughout the series, Mayor Lightfoot will join museum curators and staff as they lead virtual tours of their most popular exhibits and even share hidden treasures not usually seen by the public. Viewers will take virtual field trips to places like the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum, the DuSable Museum of African American History, the Museum of Science and Industry, the National Museum of Mexican Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and Lincoln Park Zoo. Along with each episode, students will find corresponding worksheet activities on the website to further engage with each museum experience.

Young learners will also find Stay Home. Hit Play. twice a week on Chicago’s PBS station – WTTW. The episodes will air online on Wednesdays at https://www.hitplaychicago.org/ and will air Fridays at 5:30 p.m. on WTTW (11.1) and Mondays at 12:30 p.m. on WTTW Prime (11.2). Subsequent Stay Home. Hit Play. episodes will air each Wednesday online and Fridays and Mondays on TV, and all segments and related student learning activities will be available on the series website. Please also follow the program’s Instagram handle @hitplaychicago for updates.
We look forward to bringing so much of what Chicago has to offer straight to you and your families.

Stay home. Save lives,
The City of Chicago Mayor’s Office

NOTICE OF LICENSE EXTENSION DUE TO COVID-19 OUTBREAK

May 20, 2020

DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS AFFAIRS AND CONSUMER PROTECTION
CITY OF CHICAGO

NOTICE OF LICENSE EXTENSION DUE TO
COVID-19 OUTBREAK
Be advised that on May 20, 2020, the Chicago City Council passed Ordinance 2020-2372, a COVID-19 emergency-related measure to extend the licenses that expire during the pandemic. Licenses issued by the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (“BACP”) under Title 4 or Title 9 of the Municipal Code of Chicago (“MCC”) with an expiration date on or after March 15, 2020 will hereby be considered active until 30 days after this ordinance is repealed.
The Ordinance will be automatically repealed on June 30, 2020, unless the Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health (“CDPH”) makes a written determination that the threat posed by COVID-19 has diminished to the point that the Ordinance can be safely repealed earlier. Licensees will have 30 days to renew their licenses without incurring late fees following the repeal of the Ordinance
Note that this Ordinance does not change the fee for renewal nor prorate any fees paid for renewal of a license, nor change the future renewal date of a license. Within 30 days following the repeal of the Ordinance, impacted licensees will be expected to pay the full fee associated with their license in order to renew. License renewal fees can be found in Chapter 4-5 of the MCC.
In the event that the CDPH Commissioner determines the COVID-19 threat to have sufficiently diminished to safely repeal this Ordinance earlier than June 30, BACP will provide written notification to impacted licensees.

Chicago COVID-19 News for You

April 21, 2020

Dear Chicago Residents and Partners,
Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot and the City’s Racial Equity Rapid Response Team (RERRT) are taking immediate steps to address the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on African-American communities, including tele-town halls, community PPE distribution and neighborhood canvassing. The Racial Equity Rapid Response Team is partnering with local community organizations to develop hyperlocal, data-informed strategies to slow the spread of COVID-19 and improve health outcomes among communities that have been most heavily impacted.
Three communities have been identified for initial engagement – Austin, Auburn Gresham, and South Shore. The coordinating structure comprises a steering committee and working groups focused on Education, Prevention, Testing & Treatment, and Supportive Services, each to include targeted ways to engage directly with residents in the impacted communities. Other elements of the RERRT include:
  • An Operations Team integrated into the City’s Emergency Operations Center to enable coordination and resourcing of strategies developed through local partnerships.
  • The Education/Communication Working Group, which is tailoring messaging to speak directly to the realities that people in these communities face, including protecting loved ones, and guidance for essential workers and multigenerational households.
  • A Providers Working Group that is developing strategies to proactively reach patients with underlying health conditions.
  • Community leadership networks that are coordinating the distribution of masks and protective resources to local residents in their communities.
To provide targeted information and receive direct input from residents in each neighborhood, the RERRT is hosting three tele-town halls, one for each of the priority communities. The town halls will be streamed live through each organization’s social media platforms:
Thursday, April 23:
  • 4:30-6 pm: South Shore Works (@southshoreworks)
Saturday, April 25:
  • 10:30am-12pm: Greater Auburn Gresham DC (@gagdcchicago)
  • 12:30-2pm: Austin Coming Together (@act.chicago)
In addition, last week the University of Chicago Medicine, a RERRT partner, announced expanded testing capacity in Hyde Park and at the UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial in Harvey of up to 1,000 tests per day per location for COVID-19. These tests will be available at no out-of-pocket cost to patients. Both locations will test patients by appointment with hours varying based on demand.
The City remains committed to addressing the specific needs of Chicago residents and families. We are all in this crisis together.
Stay home. Save lives.

What’s New

  • New Protective Measures for City Workers – Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot announced new protective measures to further ensure the health and safety of the City’s essential workforce amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Beginning this week, all essential City employees will be provided with and trained on the proper use of cloth masks. Additionally, new COVID Safety Officers will be designated to further ensure social distancing techniques are practiced across departments. To further protect employees with COVID-19, the City is also announcing a new partnership with Hotel Julian to provide City workers with a safe space to isolate themselves if they cannot be at home.
