About Alderman Lawson

A lifelong public servant and proud advocate for the Lakeview community, Bennett Lawson was elected as the Alderman of Chicago’s 44th Ward in 2023, after nearly 15 years as Chief of Staff in the 44th Ward office. With a wealth of experience and a genuine passion for his community, Bennett is dedicated to making Lakeview safe, thriving and inclusive for all who call it home.

As one of Chicago’s openly gay Aldermen, Bennett champions LGBTQ+ rights and inclusivity, working to ensure that Lakeview remains a welcoming and vibrant neighborhood for all. He has fought to protect small businesses and drive sustainable development, including by passing an ordinance that reduces barriers for small businesses by cutting through bureaucratic red tape.

Bennett’s focus on improving public transit, expanding outdoor dining, and enhancing walkability is central to his vision for a growing, pedestrian-friendly Lakeview. He has been a vocal proponent of lowering speed limits to make our streets safer, while also securing investments in public safety technology, such as cameras and license plate readers, to keep the community safe.

Committed to innovative housing solutions, Bennett has championed the development of ADUs (Accessible Dwelling Units), which convert unused spaces like attics, basements, and coach houses into residential units, offering more affordable and flexible housing options.
