RPM Transit Public Meeting

As you may be aware, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is planning a complete renovation of the north end of the Red Line—the CTA’s busiest—and the Purple Line.  Known as Red and Purple Modernization, the project will completely rebuild Red Line stations, rail structures and related components from Belmont to Howard, and rebuild the Purple Line and its stations to the line’s northern end.

Most parts of these lines are nearly a century old (and in a few cases, even older), well beyond their useful lifespan and long overdue for repairs. The planned improvements will not only improve train service today, but will help the CTA meet ridership demand in the decades to come.

The first phase of the project will rebuild four of the oldest Red Line stations (Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn and Bryn Mawr) and create a bypass to unclog a 100-year-old junction where Red, Purple and Brown Line trains currently intersect—allowing CTA to significantly increase the number of trains it runs along the Red Line to reduce overcrowding and meet growing demand.

RPM Phase One is in line to receive more than half of the project cost--$1.1 billion--in federal grants. But to secure that funding, a local funding match must be provided. To provide a portion of that local match, the CTA and City of Chicago are proposing the RPM Phase One Transit TIF district designation.  The RPM Phase One TIF is an economic development tool to fund public improvements, and the RPM Phase One Transit TIF would support the RPM project only. Please note that this does not impact Chicago Public Schools, as they are excluded from the Transit TIF under the State legislation.

The Red Line has served as the backbone of communities for 100 years, and RPM is designed to maintain this critical link for decades to come.

The CTA and the Chicago Department of Planning and Development will host a public meeting on Tuesday, September 13th at 6 p.m. at 2323 North SheffieldIf you’d like more information about the project, the CTA has posted information at transitchicago.com/rpmproject.
