Grid Garbage Collection Beginning 9/17/12 (3rd Phase)
Beginning September 17, the city will implement the 3rd phase of the grid garbage collection. North of W. Addison St. (in the 44th Ward) is currently on the grid system. Phase 3 will impact residents south of W. Addison St. Garbage pickup will now occur every Monday.
As part of the 2012 Budget, the City of Chicago will be transitioning to a grid-based garbage collection system that will increase efficiency and save over $20 million in operation costs. The grid system will change collection routes from non-linear ward geography to routes bordered by main streets and natural boundaries. This will concentrate sanitation workers in targeted areas of the City each day and freeing up to 20 percent of crews to focus on other sanitation issues.
