Man linked to N. Side attack - Sun-Times,
December 30, 2006
A DNA match led police to a Country Club Hills
man they think is responsible for attacking a woman in November
on the North Side. Courtney Austin, 26, was arrested without
incident Thursday in Harvey, said Chicago Police spokesman
Pat Camden. Austin was charged with aggravated kidnapping
and criminal sexual assault in connection with the Nov.
23 incident in which a 25-year-old woman was attacked in
the 3100 block of North Seminary Avenue, Camden said. The
kidnapping charge was approved because he is suspected of
taking the woman by force to another location where the
assault occurred, Camden said. DNA was recovered from the
attack and placed in a database. Police were able to identify
Austin through a DNA "hit" using the database,
and the woman picked him out in a photo array, Camden said.
Austin appeared Friday before Cook County Judge Raymond
Myles, who set bond at $500,000.
DNA leads to parolee's arrest in sex
assault case - Chicago Tribune, December 30, 2006
CHICAGO -- The rape of a North Side woman
on Thanksgiving has been solved by the arrest of a Country
Club Hills parolee linked to the crime by DNA, police alleged
Friday.
About 4:45 a.m. Nov. 23, the woman was assaulted
while walking alone in the 3100 block of North Seminary
Avenue. Two other women were attacked in the following days
by a man who fit the same description, Chicago police spokesman
Patrick Camden said.
Police immediately circulated a composite
sketch of the man but had to wait a month for DNA tests
to be completed.
Evidence recovered from the rape victim and
hair torn out by one of the later victims matched Courtney
Austin, 26, of Country Club Hills, police said. He had been
released on parole in June for a drug conviction, according
to state corrections records. His DNA was on file with authorities
because of his previous incarceration.
Austin is charged with aggravated kidnapping
and criminal sexual assault in the Thanksgiving attack,
Camden said. The investigation is ongoing in the other cases.
